![]() Individualized 2020 Wrapped playlist covers: Your Top Songs 2020, Missed Hits, and On Record. It covers your top genres, songs, and artists, as well as how many new artists you discovered and how many times you listened to your top song. As you click through the slides, you are presented with individualized information and little quizzes about your listening habits from the year. This year’s Spotify Wrapped feature was formatted similarly to Snapchat or Instagram stories. Though not nearly as big of an event as Spotify’s personalized stats and unique year-in-review playlists, it gives Apple Music users something to look forward to as well after this mess of a year. The competing streaming platform’s yearly stats feature, Apple Music Replay, has been available since January, but it has recently come to light because of the competition. Although the situation has improved, Apple Music still needs better discovery and personalization tools to compete effectively with Spotify.The two most popular music streaming services gave music lovers an early holiday gift this year! On December 2nd, Spotify released its annual 2020 Wrapped feature. The issue is part of a broader Apple Music discovery problem that extends from the inability to track Apple Music 1 radio shows to the almost non-existent promotion of Apple Music TV. I’ve enjoyed looking through my Replay statistics for 2020 and checking out a few of the Top 100 lists, but there’s so much more Apple can do to extend its year-end lists for individual users and in aggregate. The top song, Dance Monkey by Tones And I was identified by Shazam a whopping 24.6 million times in 2020. The Top 100 I find most interesting is the Shazam list, which is generated from 9.2 billion songs identified by the app. There are global, Shazam, most-read lyrics, and country-specific Top 100 lists for a total of 51 playlists available to US Apple Music subscribers. ![]() SPOTIFY MUSIC REPLAY SERIESFor anyone interested in where the global music scene is heading, these Spotify features and articles are a terrific resource.Īpple has also debuted a series of Top 100 year-end playlists. In addition to the playlist, Spotify breaks down the year in music, reporting on trends on its ‘For the Record’ podcast and the company’s blog. Spotify does a much better job with the year-end Wrapped playlist and related statistics it creates for users. However, the Replay playlists are still a feature that should be built into the company’s apps. I understand there is a privacy angle here, which undoubtedly is why Apple doesn’t generate these statistics for you automatically. I find these statistics fascinating and wish that they didn’t require you to visit a special website.
